That's Alright

|

THAT’S ALRIGHT
I recall a 4 a.m. morning, the mists of dawn
Hiding from my four-wall heaven, frozen fast.
The snows were bleakly tapping
On a door I bolted to the world.
The world was crying outside my door,
Nevermore, Nevermore--but then again,
I finally had to let you in.
And you thrive on surprises that glow in the dark,
For my candle attracted your eyes.
And you shiver with dreams when your bedroom is dark,
And you hide behind innocent lies.
But that’s alright--I’m older now.
Your floated into my refuge, beside the fire.
Consuming warmth like February: A Pisces true.
Extinguishing the firelight with your eyes,
I heard your heart grow heavy with your sighs.
I heard your need and offered warmth
You smothered it, smothered it.
With loneliness and searching arms.
And for one silly moment, we lived out of time
In a world of incense and wine.
And we pitied ourselves in a verse without rhyme
‘til I saw that your pity was mine.
But that’s alright--I’m bolder now.
You slept like a leaf in the forest, all dried and curled.
Spent with a lifetime of shadows, in winter light.
You slept as morning quickened.
I lay and smoked and watched the windows winking
At the smoke that stung my eyes.
You softly spoke his name to me
And tears betrayed your weary love.
Crimson light bathed my bedroom.
I knew I should stay where the innocent play
As the candle moaned lonely and died.
But I pitied myself in the stark light of day
Running swift. I might even have cried
But that’s alright--I’m colder now.

Sweet Lady Fair

SWEET LADY FAIR
As the summer sun sought refuge in the late August sky.
And autumn’s love stirred in the air.
To foreshadow the dread of the long winter’s night.
I first met my sweet lady fair.
Her vision appeared as she entered the room,
Where we sang our songs to the wind.
Of loves that we’d had that had drifted away,
And others that never had been.
And the seed entered deep in the womb of our hearts,
To produce the sweet flower of love.
Now my lonely heart seeks refuge in her sweet loving eyes,
While the universe reflects on her tear.
With her tears flow the joy and the pain in her heart.
A heart that makes the meaning of love very clear.

SANDY
[1947-1978]
O’ where did you go
What did you say
Miss Fotheringay
I long for your golden voice
I cry for the words that die with you
Your eyes were like poems in brown
Reflecting the flow of your gown
You spoke to me often in dreams
It seems that I loved you more than I knew
And now you’re silent
And the moon’s crying above
But the tears of sweet rain that fall
Only recall the lilt of your name
Sandy
Your life was a song
Never too long
Did something go wrong
You sang of a lonely life
I’ve held you in moonlit reverie
A stranger has haunted your soul
Inspiring the tales that you’ve told
But finally you heeded his voice
You hadn’t a choice--the stranger was you
And now you’re silent
And the moon’s crying above
But the tears of sweet rain that fall
Only recall the lilt of your name
Sandy
Did fate treat you well
How can you tell
When winter has come
Now London lies cold and grey
The days melt away in sympathy
The life that you lived was brief
Your death overshadowed by grief
The stages are barren now
You took your last bow--the world cries for you
And now you’re silent
And the moon’s crying above
But the tears of sweet rain that fall
Only recall the lilt of your name
Sandy

Never
03:06
|

NEVER
Had a dream where she crawled to my bed
Saying, “Leave, for my feelings are dying.”
And it seemed like I’d rather be dead,
When I asked her if she’d go on trying.
Now I know what she felt when she threw me away.
I’m reborn again, and I don’t want to stay.
And I guess that I’ll never go home again.
Yes, I know that I’ll never go home.
Had a fear that I’d find her again;
In another disguise I have found you.
And I learned that it’s hard to begin
When your dream is a nightmare that blinds you.
And I cried when I saw that I’d fallen once more.
I had died again as I crawled out the door.
And I guess that I’ll never go there again.
Yes, I know that I’ll never go there.
Why not run from the world to a place where I feel free?
Why not run from my dreams where I’ll live my life for me?
And it won’t make me wonder, and it won’t make me sad.
And I’ll smile while I wander, but it won’t make me glad.
But I won’t be a whole lot of anything at all.
If the years try to pass me away,
I can stop looking forward and linger.
But I can’t seem to cling to today
As it slips every hour through my fingers.
Now I’m wasting my time writing innocent songs,
But I can’t decide where these feelings belong.
And I know that I’ll try to escape again.
Yes, I guess…

Revelations

REVELATIONS
The ceiling presses heavy,
Townshend keeps the room alive.
But power-chorded music,
Only keeps my eyes aglow.
Ignoring words of wisdom,
Falling from my burdened shelves.
Flapping printed pages.
Life and truth and death and lies.
All I feel is sorrow,
Watching leather bindings fall.
All I know is nothing,
But then again nothing is all.
Hold me when I’m crying,
Scold me when I’m lying
But leave me when I’m dying,
I’ll do the same for you.
So Peter sing your anthems,
Let me know I’m still in tune.
Let me count the volumes,
Strewn about the study floor.
Let me go on writing,
Binding my rejection slips.
Now the shelves are empty.
Waiting for my book of life.
All I feel is sorrow,
Watching leather bindings fall.
All I know is nothing,
But then again nothing is all.

GODDESS OF DREAMS
Oh golden-haired vision,
Oh lady so fair,
Descend to my chamber.
Don't leave me to bear
The thought of your absence
Leaves only despair.
For as long as we're living,
Our lives we can share.
Do you know how I feel about you?
Can you feel that I'm dreaming of you?
Could you have dreamed that I've cared about you?
Would you care if you knew?
Would you care if you knew?
Oh lady of light, be with me tonight!
Oh goddess of dreams,
Please don't walk away.
For though there's tomorrow,
I need you today.
But just as the sands
Of time slip away,
You're gone from my sight.
Alone I shall stay.

Fly Away

FLY AWAY
Live your dreams in a silver sun.
Feel the earth die down below.
Talk of flight while the beggar runs,
And go on smiling where the jet-streams flow.
Fly away...
Feel the wind drift your soul in peace,
While the earth steals all that you know.
Help the beggar who seeks release
And warmth and loving where the cold winds blow.
Fly away...
Wouldn’t it be lovely to be above today:
hovering in heaven to watch the stars at play?
Lazing in the moonlight,
Shiver in the cool night.
Hey, look away...
Listen to the silence so far above the ground.
Whisper to the planets as they go spinning ‘round.
Will the currents take you
Where the winds forsake you?
Hey, look away...
Look away to the clouds at sea.
Boldly fly in the twilight’s last glow.
You’re a star, set the sunset free
Like a crimson curtain-call in heaven’s show.
Fly away...

I Lost the Song

I LOST THE SONG
When I spoke and you didn’t hear me,
You never came near me.
Well, I don’t mind. Just try to find me.
When I laughed and you sat there crying,
You knew I was dying.
Well, if you’re real, just try to feel me.
And I think I’m going nowhere
With dreams of living there.
Yes, I’m running on the north wind
And dream the sky is fair.
But I’m wrong.
I lost the song.
I’m a man who cannot be gentle;
Who tends to be mental.
I’ll never find what we call freedom.
When I drift with feelings inside me,
Oh, why can’t they hide me?
I hear the years decay; I’m straying.
And the song is fleeing endlessly
In bleeding melodies.
Soon the time will come for holding
The lyrics close to me.
But I’m wrong.
I lost the song.

GLENCOE
O’ the highlands sigh.
O’ the mother hides her eyes,
For her baby's lying, dying.
Glencoe sleeps.
Glencoe weeps away,
Waiting for the break of day.
Now the valley's dead.
Now the stream runs red.
Feel the highland skies,
Where the raven flies alone.
But the bird will go unheard,
The crime unknown.
Glencoe knows the name
For her sorrow, for her shame.
Now the valley's still.
Death has had its fill.

Just For You

JUST FOR YOU
It isn’t everyday someone comes my way just like you.
You were standing there in the room when I walked through.
Now I see your visage.
It’s etched into my mind
You’re standing there before me.
Greater beauty I never will find.
One day I’ll return as my heart still burns just for you.
You’ll be standing there in the room where I first saw you.
And I’ll kneel before thee,
And swear an oath of love.
The Gods will sing their chorus,
Hailing from above.
Who am I to say you’d even look my way when I saw you.
You’d be standing there and might not even care that I walked through.
You’re so young and nubile,
While I am past my prime.
With several years between us,
We’re separated by time.
Will I ever meet you?
And will you love me too?
Now you’re standing there in the room where I first saw you.
And you really care that I have appeared before you.
I take your hand in my hand
And give my heart to you.
My life is now complete.
To find a love so true.

REST
The train is slick on frozen steel.
The wheels go clicking through the day.
The serpent slips through whipping cream,
And fog and sleet would bar the way.
A younger man recalls the love,
Recalls the love he never told.
He sold his heart for silent dreams.
It seems the days are growing cold.
Chorus:
Let me take my needed rest.
Yesterdays will be my best.
Sleep forever; sleep today.
Let me sleep my life away.
The train is floating on the fog.
It winds around through frozen rain,
And snow is on the northern winds
To cool and soothe all earthly pain.
A younger man is wandering
And wonders if his love is sane.
He feels the frozen, trembling rails
And runs to meet the passing train.
Chorus
